Wellness: What Is It and Why We Should Practice It?

What is Wellness?

Wellness is a concept that deals with health not only in terms of the body, but also in a broader context. As defined by Dr. Halbert L. Dunn from the U.S., wellness is “a condition of change in which the individual moves forward, climbing toward a higher potential of functioning”. Many researchers have also explored the concept of wellness.

Recently, the Global Wellness Institute defined wellness as “the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health”. Based on this, wellness is viewed as adopting a lifestyle of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes.

According to previous studies, there are multiple viewpoints on what wellness is, which differs according to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and language. The most important point here is that the concept is not fixed but constantly evolving.

Rising Popularity of Wellness in the 21st Century

It was 17 years ago that American economist Paul Zane Pilzer’s book, “The New Wellness Revolution”, became a bestseller. The book predicts that the wellness industry will grow into a trillion-dollar industry and bring about revolutionary changes to the way society embraces the wellness movement.

Pilzer, an economic adviser to the US government, says from a business point of view that the wellness industry is an active business for health. Naturally, everyone desires good health. And hence, are more likely to seek wellness products and services to complement a lifestyle that enriches life in a healthier, more beautiful way.

As many first-world countries are dealing with aging populations, this is expected to accelerate the wellness lifestyle. It can be said that most of these countries are approaching the beginning of the wellness era as people are living longer and birth rates are falling.

3 Useful Wellness Habits to Adopt for a Healthy Lifestyle

We dream of a life where those around us are always healthy and free of disease. Consider making these healthy habits part of your life to increase the likelihood of staying healthy.

1) Exercise Regularly

It is best to set aside as much time as possible for walking in your daily life. It is better to keep fit by doing moderate-intensity exercise several times a week, rather than high-intensity workouts every few days.

It is recommended to do moderate-intensity aerobic exercise such as swimming, walking, cycling, jogging, aerobics, up to 3-5 days a week for at least 30 minutes. All you have to do is choose the aerobic exercise you like.

2) Consume a nutritious diet

What you eat is what you are. The average person eats and drinks constantly during waking hours. This eating habit is not good for health. Overeating leads to obesity, which is the source of all kinds of diseases. In particular, if you eat a lot of sweet, salty or oily foods, you will inevitably gain weight.

What is a healthy diet? Experts describe it as consuming a wide variety of nutrient-dense foods. In other words, eat the rainbow! Eating foods of different colors allows your body to receive as much nutrients as possible.

In particular, as you get older, you need a low-carb, high-fat diet with fewer carbohydrates and more protein. Protein is an essential nutrient for maintaining muscle mass. If you look at cancer patients, you can see just how important muscle mass is. Several studies have shown that cancer patients with sarcopenia do not tolerate treatment and have poor treatment outcomes.

3) Strengthen your mind by making small everyday improvements

Sometimes you need time to quietly reflect on yourself. With “mindfulness”, you need to empty your mind to release the stress your body feels. It is beneficial to have at least 10 minutes of reflection every morning and evening.

Close your eyes and breathe through your stomach, focusing on your breathing and the sensations your body feels. Also, developing the habit of thinking positively about everything will help improve your mood.
